# Goethe A2 Speaking Part 1 – Ask Questions

> Speaking Part 1 of the Goethe-Zertifikat A2: ask and answer questions on a topic using keywords. Structure, useful phrases, common mistakes and an example.

## Key takeaways

- You get a topic and keywords and ask your partner questions with them.
- You also answer your partner’s questions.

- Task type: Question and answer
- Focus: Asking & answering questions

## What this part tests

Part 1 tests whether you can ask and answer everyday questions on a topic. You get a topic (for example “Essen und Trinken”) and keywords on cards (for example “Frühstück”, “Restaurant”). With them you ask your partner questions.

In the same way you answer the questions your partner asks with their keywords. It’s about simple questions and short answers with a little reason.

What matters is that you form correct questions, respond to the answers and speak in whole sentences. Whoever knows a few question words confidently solves this part easily.

**What you practice:** Forming questions, Responding to answers, Talking about yourself

## How to approach it

1. Look at the topic and your keyword.
2. Form a question about the keyword with a question word (“Was isst du gern zum Frühstück?”).
3. Ask your partner the question and listen to the answer.
4. Answer your partner’s questions in whole sentences.
5. Give short reasons with “weil” and respond to the answers.

## Example task with answer

A short example in the same format: how to form a question and answer.

**Aufgabe:** Thema: „Freizeit". Dein Stichwort: „Sport". Stelle eine Frage und beantworte die Frage deines Partners.

- Example (question & answer):
  - Answer: Frage: „Machst du gern Sport?" – Antwort des Partners: „Ja, ich spiele zweimal pro Woche Fußball." / Auf die Frage „Welchen Sport magst du?" antwortest du: „Ich schwimme gern, weil das gesund ist und Spaß macht." — The example forms a question with the keyword “Sport” and gives an answer in whole sentences with a reason (“weil das gesund ist”) – exactly what Part 1 expects.

## Practice: test yourself

In Teil 1 hast du das Thema „Essen und Trinken" und das Stichwort „Frühstück".

- Which question fits the keyword?
  - a) Was isst du gern zum Frühstück?
  - b) Wie alt ist dein Bruder?
  - c) Wo ist die Post?
  - Answer: a — For the topic “Essen und Trinken” and the keyword “Frühstück”, the question “Was isst du gern zum Frühstück?” (a) fits. b and c don’t match the topic.

## Common mistakes

- **Not forming a proper question:** Use a question word and ask a whole question, not just the keyword.
- **Only “ja” or “nein”:** Answer in whole sentences with a short reason.
- **Not matching the topic:** Question and answer must match the topic and keyword.
- **Ignoring your partner:** Listen to the answers and respond to them.

## Tips

- Learn the key question words: Was, Wann, Wo, Wie oft, Wie viel.
- Practice forming a fitting question for a keyword.
- Answer in whole sentences with a short reason.
