# Goethe A2 Speaking Part 2 – Talk About Yourself

> Speaking Part 2 of the Goethe-Zertifikat A2: talk about yourself and your life on a topic. Useful phrases, common mistakes and an example.

## Key takeaways

- You talk about yourself and your life on a topic.
- Speak in whole sentences and give examples from your everyday life.

- Task type: Talking
- Focus: Talking about yourself

## What this part tests

Part 2 tests whether you can talk about yourself and your life in simple sentences. You get a topic (for example “Mein Tagesablauf”, “Meine Freizeit”, “Mein letzter Urlaub”) and talk about it – usually with the help of keywords or pictures.

It’s about fluent, coherent speaking in simple sentences. You say what you do, when and why, and give examples from your everyday life. What matters is that you speak freely and don’t just say single words.

Whoever has a few phrases for talking ready (“Normalerweise …”, “Am liebsten …”, “weil …”) talks at ease. Speak in whole sentences, give reasons and stay on topic.

**What you practice:** Talking about yourself, Speaking freely, Giving examples

## How to approach it

1. Look at the topic and the keywords.
2. Think about what you can say for each keyword.
3. Talk in whole sentences about what you do, when and why.
4. Give examples from your everyday life.
5. Stay on topic and speak coherently.

## Example task with answer

A short example in the same format: how to talk about yourself.

**Aufgabe:** Erzähle zum Thema „Meine Freizeit". Stichwörter: Hobby · Wochenende · Freunde.

- Example (extract):
  - Answer: In meiner Freizeit höre ich gern Musik und gehe spazieren. Am Wochenende treffe ich oft meine Freunde, weil ich dann mehr Zeit habe. Wir gehen zusammen ins Café oder machen einen Ausflug. Sport mache ich nicht so oft, aber im Sommer schwimme ich gern. — The example talks in whole sentences about hobby, weekend and friends, gives reasons (“weil ich dann mehr Zeit habe”) and examples – exactly what Part 2 expects.

## Practice: test yourself

In Teil 2 sollst du zum Thema „Mein Tagesablauf" erzählen.

- Which sentence is good for talking?
  - a) Normalerweise stehe ich um 7 Uhr auf und frühstücke zuerst.
  - b) Wie viel kostet das Brot?
  - c) Ich weiß nicht.
  - Answer: a — When talking about your daily routine you use whole sentences about yourself. Option a does that. b is a question, c says nothing.

## Common mistakes

- **Only single words:** Say whole sentences, not just keywords. For example “Ich stehe um 7 Uhr auf”, not just “7 Uhr”.
- **No reason:** Give short reasons with “weil” – it shows more language ability.
- **Drifting off topic:** Stay on the given topic and talk about it.
- **Talking too briefly:** Talk coherently across several sentences, not just one.

## Tips

- Learn phrases for talking: “Normalerweise …”, “Am liebsten …”, “weil …”.
- Take one example from your everyday life for each keyword.
- Speak in whole, coherent sentences.
