# Goethe-Zertifikat B2 – Listening (Hören)

> Listening (Hören) in the Goethe-Zertifikat B2: all 4 parts explained – everyday situations, an interview, a discussion and a lecture. Format, points, strategy and exercises.

## Key takeaways

- Listening has 4 parts with 30 tasks in total.
- You hear everyday situations (Part 1), an interview (Part 2), a discussion (Part 3) and a lecture (Part 4).
- You hear some texts only once – plan around 40 minutes.

Listening is one of the four modules of the Goethe-Zertifikat B2 exam. You hear demanding texts – short everyday situations, a radio interview, a discussion with several people and a lecture – and solve tasks about them. In total that’s 30 tasks in four parts. You have around 40 minutes for it.

At its core it’s about understanding information, opinions and arguments in naturally spoken language. You don’t have to understand every word, but you must recognize stances, reasons and fine points. You hear some texts only once, others twice.

The four parts call for different listening styles: in Part 1 you hear five short texts (true/false and multiple choice, once), in Part 2 an interview (multiple choice, twice), in Part 3 a discussion (matching “who says what?”, once), in Part 4 a lecture (multiple choice, twice). Always read the tasks beforehand.

- Parts: 4
- Tasks: 30
- Points: 30
- Time: 40 min
- to pass: ~60 %
- Difficulty: hard (4/5)

## Tips & strategy

- **Read the tasks before you listen:** Before each part you have time to read the tasks. Use it: mark key words so you can listen out for them purposefully.
- **Listen for the meaning, not the words:** The correct answer depends on the meaning. The audio often says the same thing in different words from the task.
- **Decide right away when heard once:** You hear Parts 1 and 3 only once. Concentrate from the start and mark your answer immediately.
- **Use the second listening:** You hear Parts 2 and 4 twice. Use the second time to check your answers and fill in any gaps.
- **In Part 3, remember the people:** In the discussion you must know who says what. Note each person’s position and match the statements.
- **Never leave a box blank:** There is no penalty for wrong answers. When unsure, decide on an answer.

## Common listening situations

In the listening part you’ll meet typical B2 audio texts:

- **Everyday situations** — short conversations, announcements, statements (Part 1).
- **Radio interview** — an interview with an expert (Part 2).
- **Discussion** — several people discuss a topic (Part 3).
- **Lecture** — one person gives a short lecture (Part 4).

## Common topics

The audio texts revolve around everyday and social topics. Prepare vocabulary for them:

- **Work & education** — job, studies, work techniques
- **Society & environment** — community, living, sustainability
- **Science & technology** — research, digitalization, health
- **Culture & lifestyle** — media, trends, consumption

- Day 3 – **Part 2 – interview:** Practice listening to an interview and solving multiple choice – you hear it twice.
- Day 4 – **Part 3 – discussion:** Practice matching statements to people in a discussion – heard only once.
- Day 5 – **Part 4 – lecture:** Practice listening to a lecture and solving multiple choice – you hear it twice.
- Day 6 – **Full listening part under time:** Work through all four parts with audio in one go and transfer your answers to an answer sheet.
- Day 7 – **Analyze your mistakes:** Listen again to the spots where you went wrong: what did you miss? Review your weakest part specifically.

## Are you ready?

- I can manage all 30 tasks at listening pace, even when I only hear once.
