# Goethe-Zertifikat C1 – Reading (Lesen)

> Reading (Lesen) in the Goethe-Zertifikat C1: all 4 parts explained – gap-fill, an article, sentence reconstruction and matching opinions. Format, points, strategy and exercises with answers.

## Key takeaways

- Reading has 4 parts with 30 tasks in total.
- You solve a gap-fill, multiple choice on an article, a sentence reconstruction and an opinion-matching task.
- You have 65 minutes for the Reading module.

Reading is one of the four modules of the Goethe-Zertifikat C1 exam. You read demanding, often (popular-)scientific texts – an informative article, a magazine article, a commentary and contributions from several specialists – and solve tasks about them. In total that’s 30 tasks in four parts. You have 65 minutes for it.

At its core it’s about demanding reading styles: reconstructing a text with the right words, understanding main points and details, restoring the logic of a text with the right sentences, and recognizing and locating the opinions of experts. You must master vocabulary, grammar in context, text logic and fine distinctions.

The four parts have different tasks: in Part 1 you choose the right word for each gap (4 options), in Part 2 you solve multiple choice (3 options) on an article, in Part 3 you insert sentences into the gaps of a commentary, in Part 4 you match statements to the right specialists. Practice them separately.

- Parts: 4
- Tasks: 30
- Points: 30
- Time: 65 min
- to pass: ~60 %
- Difficulty: hard (4/5)

## The parts at a glance

- [Part 1 – Gap-fill (MC)](https://prepliq.com/en/practice-test/goethe-zertifikat-german-c1/reading/part-1) — Gap-fill with multiple choice · Vocabulary & grammar in context · 8 Tasks · 8 Points. In Part 1 you choose the right word from four options for each of the eight gaps in an article. Here’s how to find the right solution.
- [Part 2 – Article (MC)](https://prepliq.com/en/practice-test/goethe-zertifikat-german-c1/reading/part-2) — Multiple choice · Main points & details · 7 Tasks · 7 Points. In Part 2 you read an information-rich article and answer multiple-choice questions. Here’s how to find the right option.
- [Part 3 – Insert sentences](https://prepliq.com/en/practice-test/goethe-zertifikat-german-c1/reading/part-3) — Sentence reconstruction · Recognizing text logic · 8 Tasks · 8 Points. In Part 3 you insert sentences into the gaps of a commentary. Here’s how to recognize which sentence belongs where.
- [Part 4 – Matching](https://prepliq.com/en/practice-test/goethe-zertifikat-german-c1/reading/part-4) — Matching · Recognizing & locating opinions · 7 Tasks · 7 Points. In Part 4 you read contributions from several specialists and match statements to the right people. Here’s how to grasp the positions reliably.

## Tips & strategy

- **Task first, then read purposefully:** Get an overview, then read with purpose: in Parts 1 and 3 the context around the gap counts, in Parts 2 and 4 the exact statement.
- **In Part 1, watch vocabulary & grammar:** In the gap-fill, a fixed collocation, a preposition or a connector often decides. Read the whole sentence, not just the gap.
- **In Part 3, watch the connections:** In the sentence reconstruction, reference words and connectors show which sentence belongs in which gap. Two sentences don’t fit.
- **In Part 4, note each person’s position:** First grasp what each person argues. Then match the statements – two statements fit no one (mark 0).
- **Budget time across four parts:** You have 65 minutes. Plan about 10 minutes for Part 1 and around 20 each for Parts 2 and 3. Keep an eye on the clock.
- **Transfer to the answer sheet:** Only the answer sheet is graded. Transfer your answers in good time, not in the final seconds.

## Common text types

In the reading part you’ll meet typical C1 texts:

- **Informative article** — a popular-science text with gaps (Part 1).
- **Magazine article** — a factual text with high information density (Part 2).
- **Commentary / feature** — a press text from which sentences were removed (Part 3).
- **Specialist contributions** — several experts comment on a topic (Part 4).

## Common topics

The texts revolve around abstract, often scientific topics. Prepare vocabulary for these areas:

- **Science & research** — studies, technology, digitalization, medicine
- **Economy & work** — companies, leadership, the working world, education
- **Society & environment** — community, sustainability, media, consumption
- **Culture & psychology** — behavior, values, trends, lifestyle
