# Goethe C1 Reading Part 1 – Gap-Fill

> Reading Part 1 of the Goethe-Zertifikat C1: choose the right word from 4 options for 8 gaps in an article. Format, strategy, common mistakes and a worked example.

## Key takeaways

- You read an article with 8 gaps and choose the right word from 4 options (a/b/c/d) for each gap.
- A fixed collocation, a preposition or a connector often decides.

- Task type: Gap-fill with multiple choice
- Focus: Vocabulary & grammar in context

## What this part tests

Part 1 tests whether you can reconstruct a demanding text with the right words – usually a popular-science, informative article. For each of the eight gaps you choose the right word from four options (a, b, c or d).

It tests vocabulary and grammar in context: fixed verb-preposition collocations, connectors, pronouns, articles and precise differences in meaning between similar words. You must understand the whole sentence – often the ones before and after too.

Wrong options are often almost right: the same meaning but the wrong collocation, or the right grammar but the wrong sense. Read carefully and check each option in context. Every correct answer scores points; wrong answers are not penalized.

**What you practice:** Vocabulary in context, Fixed collocations, Connectors & grammar

## How to approach it

1. Read the whole text once for an overview.
2. At each gap, read the whole sentence, often also the one before and after.
3. Consider what the gap requires: a preposition, a connector, a verb?
4. Check each of the four options in context – grammar and fixed collocations too.
5. Choose the option that fits exactly in language and meaning.
6. Transfer your answers to the answer sheet in good time.

## Example task with answer

A short example in the same format: choose the right word for the gap.

**Du liest (sinngemäß):** „Das Projekt war ein Erfolg. ___ gab es auch einige Schwierigkeiten, die das Team gemeinsam löste."

- Which option fits? (a) Dennoch · (b) Deshalb · (c) Dazu · (d) Damit
  - Answer: a — “Dennoch” expresses the contrast: despite the success there were difficulties. “Deshalb” (consequence), “dazu” and “damit” don’t fit logically.

## Practice: test yourself

In einem Artikel über ein Start-up: „Das Unternehmen hat sich ___ Reisen spezialisiert, für die man nicht weit fahren muss."

- Which option fits the gap?
  - a) auf
  - b) an
  - c) für
  - d) über
  - Answer: a — The verb “sich spezialisieren” requires the preposition “auf” (“sich auf etwas spezialisieren”). The other prepositions don’t fit this fixed collocation.

## Common mistakes

- **Ignoring a fixed collocation:** Many verbs and nouns require a specific preposition. Learn fixed collocations.
- **Checking only the meaning:** Two words can mean the same, but only one fits grammatically or the collocation.
- **Only reading the gap:** Often the sentence before or after decides. Read the whole context.
- **Leaving boxes blank:** No answer means a guaranteed zero. Guess an option if you have to.

## Tips

- Learn fixed verb-preposition and noun-verb collocations.
- Watch for connectors (“dennoch”, “entsprechend”, “zunehmend”) and their meaning.
- At each gap, read the whole context, not just the gap.
