# Goethe-Zertifikat C2 – Reading (Lesen)

> Reading (Lesen) in the Goethe-Zertifikat C2 (GDS): all 4 parts explained – commentary, match statements, insert sections and ads. Format, points, strategy and exercises with answers.

## Key takeaways

- Reading has 4 parts with 30 tasks in total.
- You read a commentary, match statements, insert sections and compare job ads.
- You have 80 minutes for the Reading module.

Reading is one of the four modules of the Goethe-Zertifikat C2 exam (GDS). You read demanding, often literary or journalistic texts – a commentary, a factual article, a feature and job ads – and solve tasks about them. In total that’s 30 tasks in four parts. You have 80 minutes for it.

At its core it’s reading at the highest level: grasping implicit statements and fine nuances of a commentary, matching statements to the right text sections, restoring the logic of a feature with inserted sections, and comparing information across several ads. You must read between the lines and recognize subtle differences in meaning.

The four parts have different tasks: in Part 1 you solve multiple choice on a commentary, in Part 2 you match statements to text sections, in Part 3 you insert removed sections into a feature, in Part 4 you compare ads and match statements. Practice them separately.

- Parts: 4
- Tasks: 30
- Points: 100
- Time: 80 min
- to pass: ~60 %
- Difficulty: very hard (5/5)

## The parts at a glance

- [Part 1 – Commentary (MC)](https://prepliq.com/en/practice-test/goethe-zertifikat-german-c2/reading/part-1) — Multiple choice · Reading between the lines · 10 Tasks · 40 Points. In Part 1 you read a demanding commentary and answer multiple-choice questions. Here’s how to grasp the fine statements.
- [Part 2 – Matching](https://prepliq.com/en/practice-test/goethe-zertifikat-german-c2/reading/part-2) — Matching · Locating statements · 6 Tasks · 18 Points. In Part 2 you match statements to the right sections of a factual article. Here’s how to grasp the core of each section.
- [Part 3 – Sections](https://prepliq.com/en/practice-test/goethe-zertifikat-german-c2/reading/part-3) — Inserting sections · Restoring text logic · 6 Tasks · 18 Points. In Part 3 you insert removed sections into a feature. Here’s how to recognize which section belongs where.
- [Part 4 – Ads](https://prepliq.com/en/practice-test/goethe-zertifikat-german-c2/reading/part-4) — Matching · Comparing ads · 8 Tasks · 24 Points. In Part 4 you compare four job ads and match statements to the right ad. Here’s how to find the matching information quickly.

## Tips & strategy

- **Task first, then read purposefully:** Get an overview, then read with purpose: in Part 1 the exact, often implicit statement counts, in Parts 2 to 4 the right match.
- **Read between the lines (Part 1):** In the commentary the answer is rarely literal. Grasp the author’s stance, irony and fine judgements.
- **Grasp the sections (Part 2):** Read the core of each text section and match the statements. Two statements fit no section.
- **Watch the logic (Part 3):** When inserting sections, references, connectors and the line of thought show which section belongs where. One doesn’t fit.
- **Budget time across four parts:** You have 80 minutes. Plan about 25 minutes for Part 1 and split the rest sensibly. Keep an eye on the clock.
- **Transfer to the answer sheet:** Only the answer sheet is graded. Transfer your answers in good time, not in the final seconds.

## Common text types

In the reading part you’ll meet typical C2 texts:

- **Commentary / essay** — an opinionated, demanding text with fine nuances (Part 1).
- **Factual article** — an information-rich text whose sections you match statements to (Part 2).
- **Feature** — a longer text from which sections were removed (Part 3).
- **Job ads** — several ads you compare by criteria (Part 4).

## Common topics

The texts revolve around demanding, often abstract topics. Prepare vocabulary for these areas:

- **Society & education** — school, career, values, community
- **Science & environment** — research, climate, energy, technology
- **Economy & media** — markets, consumption, digitalization, the press
- **Culture & language** — literature, identity, home, multilingualism
