# telc A2 Listening Part 3 – Short Conversations

> Listening Part 3 of the telc A2 exam: 5 true/false tasks on short everyday conversations. Strategy, common mistakes and a worked example.

## Key takeaways

- 5 short conversations – decide for each statement: true or false?
- Listen for the result of the conversation, not just for single words.

- Task type: True/False
- Focus: Understanding conversations

## What this part tests

Part 3 tests whether you understand short everyday conversations – for example an arrangement, a conversation while shopping or at the station. For each conversation you decide whether a statement is true or false.

Often what matters is the result of the conversation: what do the people agree on? what is decided? Listen to the end, because the answer often comes only at the end (“dann machen wir das so”).

A false statement often picks up a first suggestion that is then changed (Saturday → Sunday). Watch for the final decision. Every correct decision scores points; wrong answers are not penalized.

**What you practice:** Understanding conversations, Recognizing the result, Deciding true/false

## How to approach it

1. Before listening, read the statement and mark the important information.
2. Listen to the conversation to the end – the decision often comes at the end.
3. Pay attention to what the people agree on in the end.
4. Compare the statement with the result: is it correct?
5. Decide and transfer your answer to the answer sheet.

## Example task with answer

A short example in the same format: you hear a short conversation and decide whether the statement is true.

**Du hörst (sinngemäß):** „Nehmen wir den Bus oder das Fahrrad?" – „Bei dem Regen lieber den Bus." – „Okay, dann fahren wir mit dem Bus."

- Statement: “The people go by bike.”
  - Answer: False (Falsch) — Because of the rain they decide on the bus (“dann fahren wir mit dem Bus”). The statement about the bike is wrong – false.

## Practice: test yourself

Du hörst (sinngemäß): „Wollen wir am Samstag ins Kino gehen?" – „Am Samstag kann ich leider nicht. Aber am Sonntag habe ich Zeit." – „Gut, dann gehen wir am Sonntag."

- Is the statement true or false? Statement: “The two people go to the cinema on Sunday.”
  - r) True (Richtig)
  - f) False (Falsch)
  - Answer: r — In the end they agree: “dann gehen wir am Sonntag” (then we’ll go on Sunday). The statement is correct – true. Saturday doesn’t work, so Sunday.

## Common mistakes

- **Listening to the first suggestion:** A first suggestion is often changed (Saturday → Sunday). Listen for the final decision.
- **Deciding too early:** The answer often comes only at the end. Listen to the whole conversation.
- **Relying on one word:** A matching word isn’t enough. Check whether the whole statement fits the conversation.
- **Leaving boxes blank:** No answer means a guaranteed zero. Decide even if you have to guess.

## Tips

- Listen to the end – the decision often comes at the end.
- Watch for words like “aber”, “doch lieber” that change a suggestion.
- Use the second listen to check.
