# telc A2 Speaking Part 2 – Talk About a Topic

> Speaking Part 2 of the telc A2 exam: talk about a topic, ask a question with a keyword and answer. Phrases, common mistakes and an example.

## Key takeaways

- You talk about a topic and ask questions with a keyword.
- You also answer the questions of the other participants.

- Task type: Question–answer
- Focus: Talking about a topic

## What this part tests

Part 2 tests whether you can talk about a simple topic and ask and answer questions. You get a topic (for example “Freizeit”) and a keyword (for example “Sport”) and use them to form a question to another participant.

In the same way you answer the questions the others ask you with their keywords, and you say something about yourself on the topic. It’s about simple questions and short answers with a small reason.

What matters is that you form a correct question, respond to the answers and speak in full sentences. Whoever knows a few question words and phrases confidently solves this part easily.

**What you practice:** Forming questions, Talking about yourself, Responding to answers

## How to approach it

1. Look at the topic and your keyword.
2. Use the keyword to form a simple question (“Machst du gern Sport?”).
3. Ask the question to another participant and listen to the answer.
4. Answer the others’ questions yourself and say something about you.
5. Give short reasons with “weil” and speak in full sentences.

## Example task with answer

A short example in the same format: how to talk about a topic and ask.

**Aufgabe:** Thema: „Essen". Dein Stichwort: „Frühstück". Stelle eine Frage und beantworte die Frage deines Partners.

- Example (question & answer):
  - Answer: Frage: „Was isst du gern zum Frühstück?" – Antwort des Partners: „Ich esse meistens Brot mit Marmelade und trinke Tee." / Auf die Frage „Frühstückst du immer zu Hause?" antwortest du: „Ja, fast immer, weil ich morgens Zeit habe." — The example forms a simple question with the keyword “Frühstück” and gives an answer in full sentences with a reason (“weil ich morgens Zeit habe”) – exactly what’s expected in Part 2.

## Practice: test yourself

In Teil 2 hast du das Thema „Freizeit" und das Stichwort „Sport".

- Which question fits the keyword?
  - a) Machst du gern Sport?
  - b) Wie heißt deine Mutter?
  - c) Wo ist der Bahnhof?
  - Answer: a — For the topic “Freizeit” (leisure) and the keyword “Sport”, the question “Machst du gern Sport?” fits (a). b and c don’t fit the keyword.

## Common mistakes

- **Not forming a real question:** Ask a full question about the keyword, not just the word.
- **Only “yes” or “no”:** Answer in full sentences with a short reason.
- **Not fitting the topic:** Question and answer must fit the topic and keyword.
- **Ignoring your partner:** Listen to the answers and respond to them instead of only working through your points.

## Tips

- Learn the most important question words and simple questions.
- Practice forming a fitting question for a keyword.
- Answer in full sentences with a short reason.
