# telc B1 Hörverstehen Part 3 – Selective Listening

> Listening Part 3 of the telc B1 exam: 5 true/false tasks on short announcements. Listen for specific information – strategy, mistakes and a worked example.

## Key takeaways

- 5 short announcements – decide for each statement: true or false?
- Listen for specific information: time, place, price.

- Task type: True/False
- Focus: Selective listening

## What this part tests

Part 3 tests selective listening. You hear five short texts – usually everyday announcements – and decide for each whether a statement is true or false. The point is to listen specifically for exactly the information that the statement is about.

Unlike Part 1, the focus is often on concrete details: times, places, prices or conditions. Before listening, read the statements and think about which information you need to listen for.

The texts are short and usually played only once – concentrate from the start. A false statement often differs by just one detail (a different time, a different day). Every correct decision scores points; wrong answers are not penalized.

**What you practice:** Targeted listening, Watching the details, Deciding true/false

## How to approach it

1. Before listening, read all five statements and underline the decisive information (time, place, price).
2. Listen to the announcement and focus on exactly that information.
3. Compare the statement with what you heard: does the detail really match?
4. Decide true or false – the texts are usually played only once.
5. Transfer your +/− answers straight to the answer sheet.

## Example task with answer

A short example in the same format: you hear a short announcement and decide whether the statement is true.

  - Answer: True — Because of cleaning, the pool closes today already at 18:00; tomorrow the normal times apply again. “Earlier than usual” restates that correctly – so it’s true.

## Practice: test yourself

Du hörst (sinngemäß): „Liebe Kundinnen und Kunden, unser Supermarkt hat ab nächster Woche neue Öffnungszeiten. Wir haben dann auch sonntags von 10 bis 16 Uhr geöffnet."

- Is the statement true or false? — Aussage: „Der Supermarkt ist sonntags geschlossen."
  - r) True
  - f) False
  - Answer: f — In the announcement the supermarket will be open on Sundays from next week. The statement claims the opposite – so it’s false.

## Common mistakes

- **Missing the detail:** A different time or day already makes the statement false. Listen closely to the concrete detail.
- **Not reading first:** Without knowing the statements, you don’t know what to listen for. Use the reading time.
- **Relying on one word:** A matching word isn’t enough. Check whether the whole statement fits the text.
- **Missing the start:** Part 3 is often played only once – concentrate immediately, not after the intro.

## Tips

- Focus on the underlined key information of each statement.
- Watch for numbers and times – that’s usually where Part 3 is decided.
- Stay calm if you miss one announcement – focus on the next.
