Key takeaways

  • You talk about a topic, give your opinion and justify it.
  • Exchange opinions with your partner – agree or disagree politely.

What this part tests

Part 2 tests whether you can talk about a topic and give your opinion. You and your partner get material or bullet points on a topic – for example “living in the city or in the country” – and exchange views on it.

What matters isn’t having “the right” opinion but stating it clearly and justifying it (“Ich finde …, weil …”). Equally important: responding to your partner – agreeing, disagreeing politely or asking back.

Good phrases for opinions, agreement and disagreement make this part easy. If you only say single sentences without justifying or reacting, you give away points. Stay in the conversation and develop the topic together.

What you practice:Giving an opinionJustifyingDisagreeing politely

How to approach it

  1. 1

In the preparation, read the topic and note two or three arguments for and against.

  2. 2

State your opinion clearly and justify it (“Ich finde …, weil …”).

  3. 3

Listen to your partner’s opinion and respond – agree or disagree politely.

  4. 4

Ask follow-up questions to keep the conversation going (“Wie siehst du das?”).

  5. 5

Stay on the topic and develop it together rather than just stringing sentences.

Example task with answer

A short example in the same format: how to give and justify your opinion on a topic (phrases in German).

Topic

Sollte man lieber in der Stadt oder auf dem Land wohnen?

Example phrases (excerpt):

Answer: Meiner Meinung nach ist das Leben in der Stadt praktischer, weil man alles schnell erreicht – Geschäfte, Ärzte, Busse. Auf dem Land ist es ruhiger, aber man braucht oft ein Auto. Wie siehst du das? – Ich stimme dir teilweise zu, aber ich finde die Natur auf dem Land wichtiger.

Why? The example states a clear opinion with a reason (“weil man alles schnell erreicht”), weighs things up, asks a follow-up question and responds to the partner – exactly what Part 2 expects.

Practice: test yourself

In Part 2 your partner says: “Ich finde, alle sollten mehr mit dem Fahrrad fahren.” You don’t quite agree.

How do you politely express a different opinion?

Common mistakes

1
Opinion without a reason

“Ich finde das gut.” isn’t enough. Always give a reason with “weil …”.

2
Disagreeing rudely

Don’t say “Das ist falsch”, say “Da bin ich anderer Meinung, weil …”.

3
Ignoring the partner

React to what’s said instead of just working through your own points.

4
Drifting off topic

Stay on the given topic and develop it further.

Tips

  • Learn phrases for opinion, agreement and disagreement by heart.
  • Prepare one argument for and one against for each possible topic.
  • Justify every opinion with “weil” – it shows language skill.

Frequently asked questions

What do I talk about in Part 2?

About a given topic – usually an everyday one. You give your opinion, justify it and exchange views with your partner.

Is there a “right” opinion?

No. What counts is that you state your opinion clearly and justify it – not which opinion you hold.

How do I disagree politely?

With phrases like “Da bin ich anderer Meinung, weil …” or “Ich stimme dir teilweise zu, aber …”. That stays polite and gives a reason.

What’s the best way to practice Part 2?

Practice giving and justifying a short opinion on many topics. A Prepliq mock grades your speaking automatically.
