# telc B2 Sprachbausteine Part 2 – Vocabulary (Word Bank)

> Sprachbausteine Part 2 of the telc B2 exam: fill 10 gaps using a word bank of 15 words. Format, strategy, common mistakes and a worked example.

## Key takeaways

- 10 gaps in a text – choose the right words from a list of 15.
- Each word fits only once; five words are left over.

- Task type: Gap-fill with word bank
- Focus: Vocabulary & connectors

## What this part tests

Part 2 tests your vocabulary in context. You read a connected text with ten gaps and a list of 15 words (a–o). For each gap you look for the matching word from the list.

You may use each word only once, and five words fit no gap. At B2 it’s about demanding vocabulary: connectors (sodass, dennoch, hingegen), fixed expressions, and the right verbs, nouns or adverbs – the word has to fit both in meaning and grammatically.

The difficulty lies in choosing correctly from many options that often look similar. Filling the sure gaps first makes the list smaller and the remaining gaps easier. Every correct gap scores points; wrong answers are not penalized.

**What you practice:** Connectors, Vocabulary in context, Systematic elimination

## How to approach it

1. Read the whole text to understand the topic before you place any words.
2. Go through the list and roughly sort the words by part of speech (connector, verb, noun, adverb).
3. Fill the gaps you’re sure about first, and cross out the used words.
4. Then handle the uncertain gaps – with fewer words left, the choice gets smaller.
5. At the end, read the whole text with your words again: does everything make sense and sound correct?

## Example task with answer

A short example in the same format: put the right words from the list into the gaps.

**Text:** Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,
hiermit möchte ich mich ___ (1) das defekte Gerät beschweren. Ich bitte Sie, mir einen Ersatz ___ (2) zukommen zu lassen.

- Word bank (selection): über · auf · umgehend · vielleicht · dennoch
  - Answer: (1) über · (2) umgehend — Gap (1): “sich beschweren über” is the fixed verb-preposition collocation. Gap (2): “umgehend” (= immediately) fits the polite, formal request. “auf/vielleicht/dennoch” fit neither in meaning nor grammatically.

## Practice: test yourself

Der Zug hatte Verspätung, ___ ich meinen Anschluss verpasste. Trotzdem kam ich noch rechtzeitig an.

- Which word from the list fits? (sodass · obwohl · damit · trotzdem)
  - a) sodass
  - b) obwohl
  - c) damit
  - d) trotzdem
  - Answer: a — “sodass” states the consequence: the delay leads to missing the connection (“sodass ich … verpasste”). “obwohl” would be a contrast, “damit” a purpose, and “trotzdem” goes in a main clause.

## Common mistakes

- **Using a word twice:** Each word in the list fits only once. Cross out used words.
- **Only watching meaning:** The word also has to fit grammatically – connectors require a particular word order.
- **Starting with the uncertain gaps:** Begin with the sure gaps. Otherwise a wrong word blocks several gaps.
- **Forcing in the leftover words:** Five words are left over on purpose. Not every word has to go in a gap.

## Tips

- Connectors are often decided by word order – watch where the verb goes.
- Mark used words immediately so the list stays clear.
- If two words seem to fit, check which is really correct grammatically and in style.
