As of 2026 · Built to the official exam format
Key takeaways
- You have an in-depth discussion about your presentation (around 7–9 minutes).
- Respond to questions in a differentiated way, develop your position and weigh up.
What this part tests
Part 2 tests whether you can deepen your topic in discussion and argue spontaneously and in a differentiated way. Following your presentation, the examiner asks questions, raises objections or asks you to elaborate. The discussion lasts around 7–9 minutes.
It’s important that you respond to questions and objections, develop your position in a differentiated way and weigh up – spontaneously and fluently, without faltering. At C2 you’re expected to take up objections, differentiate and justify convincingly.
Whoever answers only briefly and sweepingly, dismisses objections or doesn’t develop their position loses points. What’s required is intellectual depth, spontaneous differentiation and stylistically assured, near-native expression.
How to approach it
- 1
Listen to the question or objection carefully and take it up.
- 2
Differentiate: agree in part, qualify or disagree with reasons.
- 3
Develop your position further instead of just repeating it.
- 4
Weigh up and use examples to support your argument.
- 5
Stay fluent and assured, even with a surprising question.
Example task with answer
A short example in the same format: how to respond to an objection in a differentiated way.
„Sie haben argumentiert, der bewusste Umgang mit Technik sei entscheidend. Ist das nicht zu optimistisch – kann man bewussten Umgang überhaupt voraussetzen?"
Example response (extract):
Why? The example takes up the objection (“Das ist ein berechtigter Einwand”), differentiates, develops the position further and even refines it – exactly what’s expected in Part 2 at C2.
Practice: test yourself
Nach deinem Vortrag fragt die prüfende Person: „Sie haben gesagt, die Digitalisierung entlaste unser Gedächtnis. Sehen Sie darin nicht auch eine Gefahr?" Du möchtest differenziert antworten.
Which response is best at C2 level?
Common mistakes
A mere “yes” or “no” isn’t enough at C2. Take up the objection and differentiate.
Take objections seriously. Agree in part or disagree with reasons instead of ignoring them.
Develop your position further instead of repeating your presentation in the discussion.
Stay fluent. If a word escapes you, paraphrase it elegantly.
Tips
- During preparation, anticipate possible questions and counter-positions.
- Learn phrases for taking up objections and differentiating by heart.
- Listen actively and address the question concretely before you argue.
