Full Exam Structure
Leseverstehen (Reading Comprehension)
30 points 60 min
Leseverstehen (Reading Comprehension)
Reading is one of the four modules of the TestDaF exam – an academic exam for admission to study at a German university. You read three texts from a higher-education and scientific context and solve 30 tasks. You have 60 minutes for it (including the time to transfer your answers to the answer sheet).
Hörverstehen (Listening Comprehension)
25 points 40 min
Hörverstehen (Listening Comprehension)
Listening is one of the four modules of the TestDaF exam. You hear three texts from university life and science – a conversation, an interview and a lecture – and solve 25 tasks. You have around 40 minutes for it.
Schriftlicher Ausdruck (Written Expression)
20 points 60 min
Schriftlicher Ausdruck (Written Expression)
Written Expression is the module of the TestDaF exam where you produce a text yourself. There is one task that consists of two steps: first you describe a graphic or statistics (data, developments, comparisons), then you take an argumentative stance on a related question. You have 60 minutes for it.
Mündlicher Ausdruck (Oral Expression)
35 points 30 min
Mündlicher Ausdruck (Oral Expression)
Oral Expression is the fourth module of the TestDaF exam and is recorded on a computer. You don’t speak with an examiner but respond to given situations: you read and hear the task, then have short preparation time and speak into a microphone afterwards. The module lasts around 30 minutes.

Frequently asked questions
What does TDN 5 mean and what level is it?
TDN 5 is the highest band (C1). You understand even linguistically very demanding texts and talks and express yourself fluently, precisely and in a well-structured way. On the CEFR scale it corresponds roughly to C1.
Is TDN 5 enough for university – what can I study with it?
TDN 5 is accepted for all degree programs, including linguistically very demanding subjects and competitive, restricted-admission programs. It exceeds the standard TDN 4 requirement.
How do I reach TDN 5?
To reach TDN 5, aim for near-complete comprehension, nuanced argumentation and a wide, accurate range of language under time pressure. Each module is graded separately, so a stronger module can offset a weaker one.
How is the TestDaF structured?
The TestDaF has four modules: Reading, Listening, Written Expression and Oral Expression. Speaking is recorded by computer. It is an academic exam for admission to study.
How long does the TestDaF take?
The modules last: Reading 60 minutes, Listening around 40 minutes, Written Expression 60 minutes and Oral Expression around 30 minutes. With breaks the exam takes several hours.
What do the levels TDN 3, TDN 4 and TDN 5 mean?
The TestDaF is not graded as “pass/fail” but in the TestDaF levels TDN 3, TDN 4 and TDN 5 – separately for each module. TDN 5 is the highest level and corresponds roughly to C1. It is accepted for all degree programs, including linguistically very demanding subjects.
What is the difference between TestDaF and DSH?
Both prove your linguistic readiness to study. The TestDaF is standardized and centrally assessed, while the DSH is administered by the individual universities. Both are usually recognized as equivalent – check what your university accepts.
How can I prepare for TDN 5?
Practice each module separately, do full model tests and get feedback above all for writing and speaking. At Prepliq you do realistic mock exams with instant scoring – writing and speaking are graded automatically against the official criteria.
How much does the TestDaF cost?
Each test center sets the fee itself and it varies by country. Ask your test center directly for the current price and the next dates. Anyone who doesn’t reach the required level pays again for the next attempt – a realistic Prepliq mock costs only a fraction of that.
