Key takeaways

  • Listening has 3 parts with 30 tasks in total.
  • You hear five radio excerpts (Part 1), a conversation (Part 2) and an interview (Part 3).
  • You hear most texts only once – plan around 35 minutes.

Overview

Listening is one of the four modules of the Goethe-Zertifikat C2 exam (GDS). You hear demanding texts – five excerpts from radio programs, a conversation between two people and an interview with an expert – and solve tasks about them. In total that’s 30 tasks in three parts. You have around 35 minutes for it.

At its core it’s about understanding demanding statements, opinions and positions in naturally spoken language – also implicit ones and with fine nuances. You don’t have to understand every word, but you must grasp exactly what is meant. You hear most texts only once, the interview twice.

The three parts call for different listening styles: in Part 1 you decide yes/no on five radio excerpts (once), in Part 2 you match opinions to the speakers (Person 1, Person 2 or both; once), in Part 3 you solve multiple choice on an interview (twice). Always read the tasks beforehand.

Difficultyvery hard

The texts are long, natural and fast, and you hear most only once. The biggest hurdle is grasping implicit statements and fine positions at listening pace.

Tips & strategy

Read the tasks before you listen

Before each part you have time to read the tasks. Use it: mark key words so you can listen out for them purposefully.

Listen for the meaning, not the words

The correct answer depends on the meaning. The audio often says the same thing in different words from the task.

Decide right away when heard once

You hear Parts 1 and 2 only once. Concentrate from the start and mark your answer immediately.

In Part 2, distinguish the speakers

In the conversation you must know who holds which opinion – or whether both agree. Note the positions.

Use the second listening (Part 3)

You hear the interview twice. Use the second time to check your answers and fill in any gaps.

Never leave a box blank

There is no penalty for wrong answers. When unsure, decide on an answer.

Common listening situations

In the listening part you’ll meet typical C2 audio texts:

Radio excerpts
five short excerpts on various topics (Part 1).
Conversation
two people talk about a topic (Part 2).
Interview
an expert is interviewed at length on a specialist topic (Part 3).
Opinions & positions
recognizing implicit statements and fine judgements.

Common topics

The audio texts revolve around demanding everyday, social and specialist topics. Prepare vocabulary for them:

Economy & consumption
markets, brands, trade, consumers
Science & environment
research, climate, urban climate, energy
Culture & society
living, lifestyle, professions, values
Media & work
film, the press, the working world
