Leseverstehen (Reading Comprehension)

Reading is one of the four modules of the Goethe-Zertifikat C2 exam (GDS). You read demanding, often literary or journalistic texts – a commentary, a factual article, a feature and job ads – and solve tasks about them. In total that’s 30 tasks in four parts. You have 80 minutes for it.

Hörverstehen (Listening Comprehension)

Listening is one of the four modules of the Goethe-Zertifikat C2 exam (GDS). You hear demanding texts – five excerpts from radio programs, a conversation between two people and an interview with an expert – and solve tasks about them. In total that’s 30 tasks in three parts. You have around 35 minutes for it.

Schriftlicher Ausdruck (Written Expression)

100 points 80 min

Writing is the module of the Goethe-Zertifikat C2 exam (GDS) where you produce text yourself. It has two parts: in Part 1 you rewrite marked passages of a short referat, using given words that may not be changed (around 20 minutes). In Part 2 you choose one of four topics and write a longer text of around 350 words (around 60 minutes).

Mündlicher Ausdruck (Oral Expression)

Speaking – the oral exam – is the fourth module of the Goethe-Zertifikat C2 exam (GDS). It has two parts and lasts around 15 minutes. Beforehand you have 15 minutes of preparation for both parts; in the exam you speak freely.

How is the Goethe-Zertifikat C2 structured?

It has four modules: reading, listening, writing and speaking. Reading, listening and writing are written; speaking is oral. You can take the modules together or separately.

How long does the Goethe-Zertifikat C2 take?

The modules last: reading 80 minutes, listening around 35 minutes, writing 80 minutes and speaking around 15 minutes (with preparation). With breaks it’s roughly half a day in total.

How many points do I need to pass the Goethe-Zertifikat C2?

Each module is scored out of 100 points. To pass you need at least 60 of 100 points (60 %) in each module. Each module is graded separately.

What does GDS mean?

GDS stands for “Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom”. The Goethe-Zertifikat C2: GDS is the highest level (C2) in the Common European Framework and certifies a near-native command of German.

Can I retake individual modules?

Yes. In the Goethe-Zertifikat C2 you can retake a module you didn’t pass on its own, without redoing the whole exam.
