Reading is one of the four modules of the TestDaF exam – an academic exam for admission to study at a German university. You read three texts from a higher-education and scientific context and solve 30 tasks. You have 60 minutes for it (including the time to transfer your answers to the answer sheet).
Listening is one of the four modules of the TestDaF exam. You hear three texts from university life and science – a conversation, an interview and a lecture – and solve 25 tasks. You have around 40 minutes for it.
Written Expression is the module of the TestDaF exam where you produce a text yourself. There is one task that consists of two steps: first you describe a graphic or statistics (data, developments, comparisons), then you take an argumentative stance on a related question. You have 60 minutes for it.
Oral Expression is the fourth module of the TestDaF exam and is recorded on a computer. You don’t speak with an examiner but respond to given situations: you read and hear the task, then have short preparation time and speak into a microphone afterwards. The module lasts around 30 minutes.

TDN 4 sits between B2 and C1. You understand demanding academic texts and talks and express yourself clearly and in a structured way, with only occasional errors. On the CEFR scale it corresponds roughly to B2.2–C1.1.
TDN 4 in all four modules is the standard requirement for admission to most German universities (Bachelor and Master). With TDN 4 four times over you are usually fully eligible to study – which is why it is the level most candidates aim for.
To reach TDN 4, handle the scientific Part 3 in reading and listening confidently and write and speak in a clearly structured, well-argued way – not just intelligibly. Each module is graded separately, so a stronger module can offset a weaker one.

Both prove your linguistic readiness to study. The TestDaF is standardized and centrally assessed, while the DSH is administered by the individual universities. Both are usually recognized as equivalent – check what your university accepts.
