Key takeaways

  • You hear an interview or specialist conversation and decide for each statement: true or false?
  • You hear the text only once. Watch the meaning and any negations.

What this part tests

Part 2 tests whether you can follow a longer interview or specialist conversation – usually on a topic close to higher education or science, often with several speakers. You decide for each statement whether it is true or false.

The statements follow the order of the conversation. In the TestDaF they are paraphrased, and you must grasp the speakers’ exact statements and reasons. You hear the conversation only once.

A false statement often picks up a word but distorts the meaning, or reverses the information. Watch for negations and qualifications. Every correct decision scores points; wrong answers are not penalized.

How to approach it

  1. 1

Before listening, read all statements and mark the key words.

  2. 2

Listen to the conversation and follow the statements in order.

  3. 3

Compare each statement with what you hear: is the meaning right?

  4. 4

Watch for negations and qualifications that reverse the statement.

  5. 5

Decide right away, because you hear only once.

Example task with answer

A short example in the same format: you hear an extract and decide whether the statement is true.

Du hörst (sinngemäß)

Experte: „Das Projekt wurde nicht wie geplant abgeschlossen, weil die Finanzierung im letzten Jahr gekürzt wurde."

Statement: “The project was finished as planned.” (true/false)

Answer: false (falsch)

Why? The expert says the project was “nicht wie geplant abgeschlossen” (not finished as planned) because the funding was cut. The statement is wrong – false.

Practice: test yourself

Du hörst (sinngemäß) ein Interview mit einer Forscherin: „Unsere Studie zeigt, dass kurze Pausen die Konzentration verbessern. Lange Pausen dagegen führen eher dazu, dass man den Faden verliert."

Is the statement true or false? Statement: “Long breaks improve concentration.”

Common mistakes

1
Missing a negation

“nicht”, “kein”, “dagegen” reverse the statement. Listen out for them specifically.

2
Same word, wrong statement

A word from the conversation doesn’t make the statement right. Watch for the meaning.

3
Losing the thread

With only one listening you can’t get stuck. Follow the statements in order.

4
Leaving boxes blank

No answer means a guaranteed zero. Decide even if you have to guess.

Tips

  • Read the statements thoroughly before listening – you hear only once.
  • Watch for negations and qualifications.
  • Follow the statements in the order of the conversation.
