Overview
Listening is one of the four modules of the Goethe-Zertifikat B2 exam. You hear demanding texts – short everyday situations, a radio interview, a discussion with several people and a lecture – and solve tasks about them. In total that’s 30 tasks in four parts. You have around 40 minutes for it.
At its core it’s about understanding information, opinions and arguments in naturally spoken language. You don’t have to understand every word, but you must recognize stances, reasons and fine points. You hear some texts only once, others twice.
The four parts call for different listening styles: in Part 1 you hear five short texts (true/false and multiple choice, once), in Part 2 an interview (multiple choice, twice), in Part 3 a discussion (matching “who says what?”, once), in Part 4 a lecture (multiple choice, twice). Always read the tasks beforehand.
The texts are natural and fast, and two parts you hear only once. The biggest hurdle is the pace and grasping opinions – manageable with focused listening training.
The parts at a glance
| Part | Task type | Focus | Tasks | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Part 1 – Everyday | True/False + Multiple choice | Understanding everyday situations | 10 | 10 |
| Part 2 – Interview (MC) | Multiple choice | Understanding an interview | 6 | 6 |
| Part 3 – Discussion | Matching | Understanding a discussion | 6 | 6 |
| Part 4 – Lecture (MC) | Multiple choice | Understanding a lecture | 8 | 8 |
Tips & strategy
Before each part you have time to read the tasks. Use it: mark key words so you can listen out for them purposefully.
The correct answer depends on the meaning. The audio often says the same thing in different words from the task.
You hear Parts 1 and 3 only once. Concentrate from the start and mark your answer immediately.
You hear Parts 2 and 4 twice. Use the second time to check your answers and fill in any gaps.
In the discussion you must know who says what. Note each person’s position and match the statements.
There is no penalty for wrong answers. When unsure, decide on an answer.
