Overview
Listening is one of the four modules of the Goethe-Zertifikat C1 exam. You hear demanding texts – a podcast (a review), a radio interview with an expert, a discussion with several people and a lecture – and solve tasks about them. In total that’s 30 tasks in four parts. You have around 40 minutes for it.
At its core it’s about understanding individual information, statements, opinions and arguments in naturally spoken language. You don’t have to understand every word, but you must recognize stances, reasons and fine points. You hear some texts only once, others twice.
The four parts call for different listening styles: in Part 1 you match statements to the segments of a podcast (once), in Part 2 you decide true/false on an interview (twice), in Part 3 you solve multiple choice on a discussion in four sections (once each), in Part 4 you solve multiple choice on a lecture (twice). Always read the tasks beforehand.
The texts are long, natural and fast, and several parts you hear only once. The biggest hurdle is the pace and grasping opinions and fine points – manageable with focused listening training.
The parts at a glance
| Part | Task type | Focus | Tasks | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Part 1 – Podcast | Matching | Matching individual information | 6 | 6 |
| Part 2 – Interview (T/F) | True/False | Understanding an expert interview | 9 | 9 |
| Part 3 – Discussion (MC) | Multiple choice | Understanding a discussion | 8 | 8 |
| Part 4 – Lecture (MC) | Multiple choice | Understanding a lecture | 7 | 7 |
Tips & strategy
Before each part you have time to read the tasks. Use it: mark key words so you can listen out for them purposefully.
The correct answer depends on the meaning. The audio often says the same thing in different words from the task.
You hear Parts 1 and 3 only once. Concentrate from the start and mark your answer immediately.
You hear Parts 2 and 4 twice. Use the second time to check your answers and fill in any gaps.
The discussion comes in four sections, each with two tasks. Read both tasks before each section.
There is no penalty for wrong answers. When unsure, decide on an answer.
