Reading is one of the four modules of the Goethe-Zertifikat C1 exam. You read demanding, often (popular-)scientific texts – an informative article, a magazine article, a commentary and contributions from several specialists – and solve tasks about them. In total that’s 30 tasks in four parts. You have 65 minutes for it.
Listening is one of the four modules of the Goethe-Zertifikat C1 exam. You hear demanding texts – a podcast (a review), a radio interview with an expert, a discussion with several people and a lecture – and solve tasks about them. In total that’s 30 tasks in four parts. You have around 40 minutes for it.
Writing is the module of the Goethe-Zertifikat C1 exam where you produce text yourself. It has two parts: in Part 1 you write an argumentative discussion post for an internet forum (around 230 words) covering four guide points, in Part 2 a formal message, for example a complaint (around 100 words). You have 75 minutes for it.
Speaking – the oral exam – is the fourth module of the Goethe-Zertifikat C1 exam. You speak in two parts, usually in a pair with another candidate (an individual exam is also possible). Beforehand you have 20 minutes of preparation; notes are allowed, and in the exam you speak freely.

It has four modules: reading, listening, writing and speaking. Reading, listening and writing are written; speaking is oral and takes place as a paired or individual exam. You can take the modules together or separately.
The modules last: reading 65 minutes, listening around 40 minutes, writing 75 minutes and speaking around 20 minutes (with preparation). With breaks it’s roughly half a day in total.
Each module is scored out of 100 points. To pass you need at least 60 of 100 points (60 %) in each module. Each module is graded separately.
Yes. In the Goethe-Zertifikat C1 (modular) you can retake a module you didn’t pass on its own, without redoing the whole exam.
Both certify the C1 level but have a slightly different format. The Goethe-Zertifikat C1 is modular, so you can take the four modules separately. Check which exam your exam center offers.
Practice each module separately, do full model tests and get feedback above all for writing and speaking. At Prepliq you do realistic mock exams with instant scoring – writing and speaking are graded automatically against the official criteria.
Each Goethe-Institut or exam center sets the fee itself. Ask your exam center directly for the current price and the next dates. Anyone who fails pays again for the next attempt – a realistic Prepliq mock costs only a fraction of that and prepares you to pass first time.
