Key takeaways
Reading is one of the four modules of the Goethe-Zertifikat C1 exam. You read demanding, often (popular-)scientific texts – an informative article, a magazine article, a commentary and contributions from several specialists – and solve tasks about them. In total that’s 30 tasks in four parts. You have 65 minutes for it.
At its core it’s about demanding reading styles: reconstructing a text with the right words, understanding main points and details, restoring the logic of a text with the right sentences, and recognizing and locating the opinions of experts. You must master vocabulary, grammar in context, text logic and fine distinctions.
The four parts have different tasks: in Part 1 you choose the right word for each gap (4 options), in Part 2 you solve multiple choice (3 options) on an article, in Part 3 you insert sentences into the gaps of a commentary, in Part 4 you match statements to the right specialists. Practice them separately.
The texts are long, abstract and linguistically demanding. The biggest hurdle is the precise vocabulary in the gap-fill and recognizing text logic and fine points – manageable with focused training.
| Part | Task type | Focus | Tasks | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Part 1 – Gap-fill (MC) | Gap-fill with multiple choice | Vocabulary & grammar in context | 8 | 8 |
| Part 2 – Article (MC) | Multiple choice | Main points & details | 7 | 7 |
| Part 3 – Insert sentences | Sentence reconstruction | Recognizing text logic | 8 | 8 |
| Part 4 – Matching | Matching | Recognizing & locating opinions | 7 | 7 |
Get an overview, then read with purpose: in Parts 1 and 3 the context around the gap counts, in Parts 2 and 4 the exact statement.
In the gap-fill, a fixed collocation, a preposition or a connector often decides. Read the whole sentence, not just the gap.
In the sentence reconstruction, reference words and connectors show which sentence belongs in which gap. Two sentences don’t fit.
First grasp what each person argues. Then match the statements – two statements fit no one (mark 0).
You have 65 minutes. Plan about 10 minutes for Part 1 and around 20 each for Parts 2 and 3. Keep an eye on the clock.
Only the answer sheet is graded. Transfer your answers in good time, not in the final seconds.

In the reading part you’ll meet typical C1 texts:
The texts revolve around abstract, often scientific topics. Prepare vocabulary for these areas:
Read this guide and do a first reading practice test with the official Modellsatz – without time pressure, just to understand the structure.
Practice choosing the right word: fixed collocations, prepositions, connectors. Read the whole sentence.
Practice solving multiple choice on an information-rich article.
Practice inserting sentences into gaps. Watch reference words and connectors.
Practice matching statements to specialists – and recognizing when no person fits.
Work through all four parts in one go in 65 minutes and transfer your answers to an answer sheet.
Look at every mistake: which fine point or word did you miss? Review your weakest part specifically.
Four parts with 30 tasks in total: Part 1 (gap-fill with multiple choice, 8), Part 2 (article, multiple choice, 7), Part 3 (sentence reconstruction, 8) and Part 4 (matching opinions, 7).
The Reading module lasts 65 minutes. In the Goethe-Zertifikat C1 each module is timed separately, and you can also take the modules on different days.
