Key takeaways

  • 5 phone messages – decide for each statement: true or false?
  • Listen for the important information such as appointment, time or name.

What this part tests

Part 1 tests whether you understand short phone messages – for example answering-machine messages with an appointment change, an invitation or some information. For each message you decide whether a given statement is true or false.

What matters is the concrete information: when is the appointment? who is calling? what should you do? Before listening, read the statements and mark the key words. You usually hear the messages twice.

A false statement often differs in just one detail – a different day, a different time. Listen carefully for the number or name. Every correct decision scores points; wrong answers are not penalized.

How to approach it

  1. 1

Before listening, read the statement and mark the important information (appointment, time, name).

  2. 2

Listen to the message and focus on that information.

  3. 3

Compare the statement with what you heard: does the detail really match?

  4. 4

Mark your answer and check it on the second listen.

  5. 5

Don’t leave any statement open – when unsure, decide.

  6. 6

Transfer your +/– answers to the answer sheet in good time.

Example task with answer

A short example in the same format: you hear a phone message and decide whether the statement is true.

Du hörst (sinngemäß)

„Hallo, hier ist Frau Klein von der Sprachschule. Ihr Deutschkurs beginnt nächste Woche am Montag, nicht am Dienstag. Bitte kommen Sie um 18 Uhr."

Statement: “The German course starts on Tuesday.”

Answer: False (Falsch)

Why? In the message the course starts “am Montag, nicht am Dienstag” (on Monday, not Tuesday). So the statement is wrong – false.

Practice: test yourself

Is the statement true or false? Statement: “The new appointment is on Thursday at 10 a.m.”

Common mistakes

1
Missing the detail

Even a different day or time makes the statement false. Listen carefully for the information.

2
Missing the negation

“fällt aus”, “nicht”, “kein” can flip the statement. Listen for them specifically.

3
Not reading the statements first

Without knowing the statements, you listen aimlessly. Use the reading time.

4
Leaving boxes blank

No answer means a guaranteed zero. Decide even if you have to guess.

Tips

  • Before listening, mark key words like appointments, times and names.
  • Watch especially for appointment changes (“nicht …, sondern …”, “fällt aus”).
  • Always use the second listen to check.
