It has two parts: in Part 1 you write an argumentative discussion post for an internet forum (around 230 words) covering four guide points, in Part 2 a formal message, for example a complaint (around 100 words). You have 75 minutes for it.

How is the Goethe-Zertifikat C1 structured?
It has four modules: reading, listening, writing and speaking. Reading, listening and writing are written; speaking is oral and takes place as a paired or individual exam. You can take the modules together or separately.
How long does the Goethe-Zertifikat C1 take?
The modules last: reading 65 minutes, listening around 40 minutes, writing 75 minutes and speaking around 20 minutes (with preparation). With breaks it’s roughly half a day in total.
How many points do I need to pass the Goethe-Zertifikat C1?
Each module is scored out of 100 points. To pass you need at least 60 of 100 points (60 %) in each module. Each module is graded separately.
Can I retake individual modules?
Yes. In the Goethe-Zertifikat C1 (modular) you can retake a module you didn’t pass on its own, without redoing the whole exam.
What is the difference between telc C1 and the Goethe-Zertifikat C1?
Both certify the C1 level but have a slightly different format. The Goethe-Zertifikat C1 is modular, so you can take the four modules separately. Check which exam your exam center offers.
