Listening is the first part of the written telc A1 exam. You hear short, simple everyday texts – small conversations, announcements and answering-machine messages – and solve tasks about them. In total that’s 15 tasks in three parts. You have around 20 minutes for it.
Reading is the second part of the written telc A1 exam. You read short, simple everyday texts – small letters and emails, ads and signs – and solve tasks about them. In total that’s 15 tasks in three parts. Reading and writing share a block of around 45 minutes; plan about 25 minutes for reading.
Writing is the part of the telc A1 exam where you produce text yourself. It has two parts: in Part 1 you fill in a form (five missing pieces of information), in Part 2 you write a short personal message – for example a text message or a short note. Reading and writing share a block of around 45 minutes; plan about 20 minutes for writing.
Speaking – the oral exam – is the last part of the telc A1 exam. You speak in three parts, usually in a small group with other participants. The exam lasts around 15 minutes. You speak with the others and with the examiner.

You pass telc German A1 with 60 % of the total points. There is no fixed minimum per exam part – you can offset weaker parts with stronger ones.
It’s the same exam. “Start Deutsch 1” is the joint name used by telc and the Goethe-Institut for the A1 exam; the structure, level and assessment are identical.
