What this part tests

Part 2 tests whether you can discuss a topic and argue. You and your partner get a controversial topic – such as “Should cars be banned from city centers?” – often with a short text or notes from preparation, and exchange views on it.

What matters is not having “the right” opinion, but stating your opinion clearly and justifying it (“Ich bin der Ansicht, dass …, weil …”). Equally important: respond to your partner – agree, disagree politely, weigh up and respond to counter-arguments.

Good phrases for opinion, reasons, agreement and disagreement make this part easier. Whoever just says single sentences without justifying or responding loses points. Stay in the conversation and develop the topic further with arguments.

How to approach it

  1. 1

In preparation, read the topic (and text) and note arguments for and against.

  2. 2

State your opinion clearly and justify it with an argument (“… weil …”).

  3. 3

Weigh up: also name the other side (“einerseits … andererseits”).

  4. 4

Listen to your partner’s arguments and respond – agree or disagree politely.

  5. 5

Stay on topic and develop the discussion with further arguments.

Example task with answer

A short example in the same format: how to state and justify your opinion and respond to your partner.

Thema

Sollten Autos aus den Innenstädten weitgehend verbannt werden?

Example discussion (extract):

Answer: Meiner Ansicht nach wäre eine weitgehend autofreie Innenstadt sinnvoll, weil sie die Luft verbessert und mehr Platz für Menschen schafft. Einerseits ist das gut für Umwelt und Lebensqualität, andererseits müssen wir an Menschen denken, die auf das Auto angewiesen sind. – Das sehe ich ähnlich, allerdings braucht es dann einen sehr guten Nahverkehr als Ersatz.

Why? The example states a clear opinion with a reason (“weil sie die Luft verbessert”), weighs up (“einerseits … andererseits”), responds to the partner and brings a further argument (“allerdings braucht es …”) – exactly what’s expected in Part 2.

Practice: test yourself

In Teil 2 sagt dein Partner: „Soziale Medien schaden eher, als dass sie nützen." Du bist nicht ganz seiner Meinung.

Common mistakes

1
Opinion without reason

“Ich finde das gut.” isn’t enough at B2. Always give an argument and justify it.

2
Disagreeing rudely

Don’t say “Das ist falsch”, but “Das sehe ich anders, weil …” or “Das mag stimmen, allerdings …”.

3
Ignoring your partner

Respond to your partner’s arguments instead of only working through your own points.

4
Not weighing up

At B2 weighing up is expected. Also name the other side (“einerseits … andererseits”).

Tips

  • Learn phrases for opinion, reasons, agreement and polite disagreement by heart.
  • Prepare two arguments for and against for common topics.
  • Weigh up and respond – a real discussion scores more than a monologue.

Frequently asked questions

What do I talk about in Part 2?

About a given, often controversial topic. You state your opinion, justify it, weigh up and discuss with your partner.

Is there a “right” opinion?

No. What counts is that you state your opinion clearly, justify it and respond to counter-arguments – not which opinion you hold.

How do I disagree politely?

With phrases like “Das sehe ich anders, weil …” or “Das mag stimmen, allerdings …”. That way you stay polite and justify.

What’s the best way to practice Part 2?

Practice justifying and weighing up your opinion on many topics. A Prepliq mock scores your speaking automatically.
