telc C1 Reading Part 1 – Matching
In Part 1 you match the right headings or summaries to the sections of a text. Here’s how to grasp the main idea of each section.
As of 2026 · Built to the official exam format
Key takeaways
- You match the right headings or summaries to 6 sections of a text.
- The main idea of each section counts, not a single word.
What this part tests
Part 1 tests whether you grasp the main idea of individual text sections. You read a longer, structured text and match each section to the appropriate heading or summary from a list. Some options fit no section.
It’s not about details, but about the core of each section – at C1 often including a qualification or judgement. You may use each heading only once.
The biggest danger is distractors: headings that pick up a word from the section but don’t fit in meaning. Always check the overall statement of the section. Every correct match scores points; wrong answers are not penalized.
How to approach it
- 1
Read a section and sum up its main idea in one sentence – including the judgement.
- 2
Look for the heading that captures exactly this idea, not just a single word.
- 3
Cross out each heading you’ve assigned so the pool gets smaller.
- 4
Do the sure matches first and leave the difficult ones for the end.
- 5
Check at the end that each heading really fits the core of its section.
- 6
Enter an answer for every section – even when guessing, because there’s no penalty.
Example task with answer
A short example in the same format: match the right heading to the section.
Headings: (a) KI ersetzt menschliche Fachleute · (b) Gute Ergebnisse brauchen gute Daten · (c) Datenmengen werden immer größer · (d) Training kostet viel Zeit
Why? The section stresses that AI results depend on the quality of the training data – that matches heading b. (a), (c) and (d) pick up single aspects but miss the main idea.
Practice: test yourself
Which heading fits this section best?
Common mistakes
A shared word is not the answer. Check the overall statement of the section.
At C1 the main idea often contains a “jedoch” or “nicht allein”. The correct heading reflects it.
Each heading fits only one section. Cross out headings you’ve used.
No answer means a guaranteed zero. Enter an answer even if you have to guess.
Tips
- Watch for signal words for qualifications (jedoch, allerdings, nicht allein) – they reveal the main idea.
- Formulate the main idea of each section in your own words before you read the headings.
- The “extra” headings are often distractors with words from the text.
