telc C2 Written Expression – Writing a Demanding Text
You write a demanding, differentiated text on a topic. Here’s how to open it up, structure it and formulate it at C2 level.
As of 2026 · Built to the official exam format
Key takeaways
- Write a structured, differentiated text on a topic – an essay/statement.
- Structure: introduction – body (weigh perspectives) – conclusion (reasoned position).
What this part tests
In this part you produce a demanding text yourself. You receive a topic – usually a controversial thesis or question on society, science or culture – and write an essay, statement or commentary. You have 90 minutes and can earn 40 points.
Three things are decisive: you treat the topic comprehensively and in a differentiated way (task fulfillment), you build the text clearly and coherently (communicative design: introduction, body, conclusion, thread, style) and you write almost error-free with linguistic range (accuracy).
The most common point losses at C2: argumentation that’s too superficial or one-sided, a limited style with repetition, or small linguistic weaknesses that carry more weight at C2. Whoever opens up the topic in depth, argues in a differentiated way and varies stylistically convinces.
How to approach it
- 1
Open up the topic comprehensively: which perspectives, aspects and tensions are there?
- 2
Collect arguments, counter-arguments and examples and order them into a clear structure.
- 3
Plan: introduction (topic, relevance), body (weigh perspectives), conclusion (reasoned position).
- 4
Write coherently and connect the paragraphs with demanding connectors.
- 5
Vary sentence structure and vocabulary and avoid repetition.
- 6
Check at the end: depth, structure, style, accuracy?
Example task with answer
A short example in the same format: the task and an extract showing depth and style.
Erörtern Sie die Frage: „Sollte der Zugang zu Hochschulbildung vollständig gebührenfrei sein?" Erschließen Sie das Thema, wägen Sie verschiedene Perspektiven ab und entwickeln Sie eine begründete Position.
Model extract (introduction + weighing):
Why? The extract introduces the topic in a differentiated and elevated way, weighs up with “Befürworter … Gleichwohl ist einzuwenden …” and shows nuance and stylistic assurance – exactly what’s expected at C2.
Practice: test yourself
Du schreibst eine Erörterung zur Frage, ob künstliche Intelligenz menschliche Arbeit ersetzen wird.
Which sentence is best suited as a demanding introduction?
Common mistakes
At C2 depth is expected. Open up the topic in its complexity instead of staying on the surface.
Weigh different perspectives and develop a nuanced position, not just “for” or “against”.
Repetition and simple structures cost points. Show linguistic range.
At C2 even small mistakes carry weight. Check your text carefully at the end.
Tips
- Plan thoroughly – opening up the topic and the structure decide the depth.
- Learn a demanding set of phrases for arguing, weighing up and qualifying.
- Deliberately vary sentence structure and vocabulary and read your text critically at the end.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to treat different perspectives?
Yes. At C2 differentiated argumentation is expected. Weigh different positions before developing your reasoned position.
How important is style at C2?
Very important. Besides correctness, stylistic range, nuance and near-native expression count.
How long should the text be?
Long enough to treat the topic comprehensively and in a differentiated way. Depth and structure matter more than a specific word count.
How do I get feedback on my text?
The official PDF answer key doesn’t assess writing. At Prepliq a mock scores your text automatically against the official criteria – task fulfillment, communicative design and accuracy.
